about

Most of it written in my head while on a nice little walk on a beautiful sunny warm winter day.

Like a lot of us, it is easy to pick apart little details when mixing and sometimes that is a good thing but sometimes it can edit the life out of a recording. One of the reasons that I love FAWM so much is that most of us don't have time to edit much so all the fun little quirky imperfections are left in there.

When I was a kid, I loved music the Beatles and other music from the 60s and would love to hear all the little things in the background and weird sonics. These days, I am always amazing when I go back and listen to all the classic albums from the 50s, 60s, 70s and pay attention to the mixes, the tuning, the timing, etc and hear all the things that would have been edited out today... but those same things are also one of the reasons why so many people still love those songs.

These days all my favorite modern albums still have a bunch of weird little quirks and imperfections. Anyways, that where this song comes from. I try and remember that when I am editing. ;)

Disclaimer: I wasn't actually alive yet in any of the decades mentioned in this song but my first two albums were mixed by hand, with manual edits and without automation and although it was fun at the time... I am so grateful for modern recording technology, the ability we have to edit and will use any tool at my dispose when needed. :)

lyrics

Favorite Imperfections – February 23, 2021

I may never sing in perfect pitch
May never snap quite to the grid
Might never have a radio hit
But if I did...

It'd be a little loose
Might be a little pitchy
Just like it was back in the sixties
When they hit it hard
They made it swing for us
Or push the tempo in the chorus

I put the classic records on
I hear all the things that went wrong
Those imperfections are my favorite parts
Love to hear...

When it gets a little loose
Might get a little pitchy
Like the 70s, 60s, 50s
Might have a little crackle
Might have a little hiss
Not quantized with perfect pitch
It ends up a little loose
Might get a little pitchy
Those imperfections make it feel real to me.
